WHAT CAUSES ACNE??

As we are all in search of smooth, clear skin it is emotionally upsetting when we experience breakouts of any type.  Whether it is a pimple or any other type of skin eruption or condition, it can be devastating.  While we are striving toward healthy skin lets examine WHAT CAUSES ACNE since this is definitely one of the skin issues that causes a lot of upset.

INTRODUCTION

Acne occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. It can appear as blackheads, whiteheads, or pimples. Acne is normally found on the face, chest, forehead, shoulders and upper back, but can also appear on the upper arms, although less common. Acne is common among teenagers; however, it can appear as adult onset acne.

Although there are effective treatments, acne can be stubborn. It takes time to heal and just when you have healed one bump, others pop up making it very frustrating to control.

Depending on the type of acne, it can leave both emotional and physical scars. It is recommended to treat early to lower your risk of any type of scarring.

SYMPTOMS

The severity of acne determines the types of symptoms.  Whiteheads are closed clogged pores and blackheads are opened clogged pores while small red bumps known as papules can become a pimple (pustule) which is a papule with puss at the tip.  More severe are nodules, or large, painful bumps underneath the skin, and cystic acne, or painful, puss filled lumps beneath the skin.

CAUSES

Studies show that most acne is either caused by excess oil production, clogged hair follicles, bacteria and hormones.  Acne appears in oily body parts such as the face and upper body as these areas have a lot of oil glands and hair follicles. Pimples are red bumps with white centers that erupt when bacteria and inflammation block hair follicles.

Certain medications, diet, stress and hormones may worsen acne. Age and genetics also raise risk for developing acne.  Pressure on skin such as a phone or helmet may increase the risk for acne.

TREATMENT

In many cases, acne can be treated at home with over the counter products designed to heal acne flareups.  In some circumstances, medical treatment from dermatologists is recommended as more powerful medications are required to clear acne.  For many women, acne can last decades as it presents one week prior to menstruation. This type of acne usually responds well to over the counter treatment.  It is important to use products that contain proper nutrients designed to heal acne.  Some ingredients proven to heal acne include:

  • Tea tree oil, Peppermint oil
  • Aloe Vera juice, Vitamin E
  • Apple cider vinegar, Hemp seed oil
  • Frankincense and myrrh oils
